A native of Indianola, MS and a resident of New Orleans for over 40 years. Velma loved her city! She worked for many years for Maison Blanche, Whitney Bank and Data Processing Co. While in New Orleans, she was active in SPUR, RSVP, and N.O. Council on Aging Eldercare Coalition. She served on the board of AARP Chapter #1316 and was acting Secretary and Community Service Chair for several years in each position and received the 2006 AARP Andrus Award for community service. Velma was well known at community events for her "deviled eggs". She also served as a Docent at Hermann-Grima/ Gallier Historic houses and volunteered as a N.O. Public Safety Ranger walking around downtown New Orleans assisting visitors to the city, where she so enjoyed talking about the history of New Orleans!
After Katrina, Velma was evacuated by boats out of her much loved New Orleans Mid-City home and has lived in Baton Rouge’s MID-city where she was an active member of First Baptist Church on Convention St. During her time in BR she volunteered with the Church Homeless Ministry for 12 years, still volunteered with AARP, and received the 2012 Baton Rouge Woman's Council Silver Magnolias Award. Velma loved volunteering and giving herself to others.
