Thomas J. Walter of LaPlace, Louisiana reached his final checkered flag in the race of life on Thursday, August 19, 2021. He is survived by his loving wife, Charlene Powers Walter; his brother, John S. Walter, II (Mary Pat); his nieces, Lauren W. VanCamp and Stephanie Walter; his nephew, John S. Walter, III (Jackie); his great-nephews, Blaise VanCamp, John S. Walter, IV and Salvatore Walter. He is also survived by his former wife, Barbara J. Brouillette. He was the son of the late John S. Walter and Ruth Abadie Walter. He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana and was raised in Metairie where he graduated from East Jefferson High School in 1965. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the U. S. Air Force and served his country. He had a career with Union Carbide in Taft, Louisiana where he made lifelong friends with whom he continued to connect with after his retirement. You could always see him around town with his high school friends, O. J. Williams, Jack Steltz and Billy Probst. Tom enjoyed many hobbies, from racing motorcycles and automobiles, to sailing and precision shooting. He was also an avid cyclist. Upon his retirement, he began his passionate career as Race Control at some of the finest racetracks in the country where he acquired many more friends in the racing world. He was the calm, soothing voice of Race Control at NOLA Motorsports Park and No Problem Raceway. He always had such a calm demeanor and positive outlook on life. He will surely be missed by all.
Visitation will be at Garden of Memories, 4900 Airline Drive, Metairie, Louisiana 70001 on Wednesday, August 25, 2021 beginning at 9:00 AM, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM. Masks are mandated. All those who knew and loved him are invited. Interment will be in the Resurrection Mausoleum located in Garden of Memories Cemetery.
