It is with sad hearts that we announce the passing of Rowena Redwine Shepherd.
She passed away on Tuesday, July 10, 2018 after having made 101 a few days earlier. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 28 years, Elmore James Shepherd, Sr.; her parents, Isaac Redwine and Pearl Mobley Redwine and her five siblings, Carolyn Fripp (Robert), Franklin Redwine (Sally), Vivian Redwine, Louise Redwine and Mary Bess Redwine. She is survived by her three children, Elmore “Skip” James Shepherd, Jr. (Frances), Rowena Jean Shepherd Etharidge (Robert) and Caroline Mary Shepherd Pollet (Dalton); six grandchildren: Elmore Shepherd, III (Priscilla), Jeremy Shepherd (Brenda), Joaquin Shepherd (Lauren) and Amy Etharidge Kluck, (Thomas), Paula Pollet Serbia (Carlos) and Laura Pollet Sharp (John) in addition to 16 great-grandchildren. Rowena was born on July 6, 1917 in the neighborhood of Shandon located in Columbia, SC. She met her husband, Captain Elmore Shepherd, Sr., United States Army, at a Fort Jackson USO dance, and after a short engagement, they were married in her mother’s home. She followed her husband throughout World War II, and at war’s end, they settled in New Orleans (her husband’s hometown) where Rowena lived in Mirabeau Gardens for 73 years. She served as president and secretary of the Cosmo Pal Club and was a member of the Altar Guild Society for Holy Comforter Episcopal Church. She also served as the leader of Girl Scout Troop 93.
Funeral services will be held at Garden of Memories Funeral Home, 4900 Airline Drive in Metairie on Saturday, July 14, 2018. Visitation will begin at 11:00 am followed by a Funeral Mass at 1:00 pm. Interment will be in Garden of Memories Cemetery.
