On Saturday, July 29, 2017, Rose Althea Abele Swegel passed away at the age of 93. She was born on September 29, 1923 in New Orleans to Otto Abele and Catherine Schwenk Abele. She was a life-long resident of New Orleans and a graduate of St. Mary’s Dominican High School and St. Mary’s Dominican College. Rose formerly held the position of Executive Assistant at the Eighth Naval District in New Orleans. As a strong promoter of women empowerment, Rose was the president of the Business and Professional Women’s Club of Jefferson Parish. One of Rose’s most cherished roles was helping raise her grandchildren, Adam Conrad Hymel and Caroline Rose Hymel. Rose was known for her impeccable ability to create a beautiful garden, and she made a profound impact on everyone who knew her. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She was the beloved wife of the late Edward Matice Richardson, Jr. by first marriage and the late John Carl Swegel by second marriage. She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Linda Richardson Hymel and Dr. Edward Matice Richardson, III. Rose is also survived by seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the graveside service on Wednesday, August 2, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at the Garden of Memories Cemetery.
