Richard Lee “Richie” Williams Sr. died peacefully in his sleep on Monday, March 22, 2021 at the age of 84 after a lengthy battle with cancer. Born on July 5, 1936 in Mount Vernon, Illinois, he grew up in New Orleans and graduated from Fortier High School where he met the love of his life, Helen Jean Sarver. They married in 1956. He proudly served in the New Orleans Police Department from 1957 to 1973 and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police. He also served in the National Guard during the Korean War. All his life, he was a proud entrepreneur, owning several businesses including BAR Amusement Co., Rodeway Inn Motel, The Colony Restaurant, the Frostop, H&R Vending Co., Double R Feed Co., and Williams Construction Company. He was a member of the Knights of Babylon Carnival Krewe for 50 years where he served as an officer and head horse lieutenant. He had a passion for horses and bought a farm in Covington where, for 23 years, he raised Thoroughbred racehorses. Richie never met a stranger. A friend to many, he was always up for a conversation with anyone who needed to talk. He was known for his luxurious hair, his outrageous stories, and his great sense of humor.
He was preceded in death by his father, Louis Edward Williams Sr.; his mother, Clema Bell Jay Williams; his brothers, Samuel Williams and Louis E. Williams Jr.; and his son-in-law, William R. Randall. He is survived by his wife, Helen Jean Sarver Williams, whom he adored; his daughter, Sharon Lynne Williams Andrews and son-in-law, Brian Andrews; his daughter, Donna Lisa Williams; his son, Richard Lee Williams Jr. and daughter-in-law, Jayne Bayley Williams; his daughter, Erika Luckie Williams Green and son-in-law, Matthew “Trey” Green III; his beloved fur-kid, Marley; six grandchildren: Greg Terpevich, Evan Evangeline Williams Andrews, Ryan Louis Williams, Jonah Scott Williams Andrews, Chloe Isabella Williams and Cary Skylar Randall and one great-grandchild, Roman Louis Williams as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to celebrate Richie’s life at a service on Monday, April 5, 2021 at 12:00 PM at Garden of Memories Funeral Home, 4900 Airline Drive in Metairie. The Rev. Tim Barnes of St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church will officiate. Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM until 12:00 PM. Interment will be in Garden of Memories Cemetery.
