Norbert Sidney Gilly, Jr.

Our beloved father, Norbert Sidney Gilly, Jr. entered into eternal life on Easter Sunday, April 1, 2018 at the age of 94. Born in New Orleans on February 1, 1924, he was the son of the late Mary Louise (Jones) and the late Norbert Sidney Gilly, Sr., brother of the late Reverend Sidney J. Gilly, S. J. and Dorothy M. Gilly Truitt. Devoted husband of 63 years to the late Ora M. (Chaisson) Gilly and the father of four children: Patricia Gilly Lawson, Frederick N. Gilly (Norma) and Charles A. Gilly (Wendy) all of New Orleans, LA and Elaine March (Mark Carrabello) of Lafayette, CA. He is also survived by eight grandchildren: Ryan, Chris and Colin Lawson, Brett Gilly and Ansley Gilly Hammons, Beth Tucker, Eric Gladney and Charles Gilly, Jr. as well as six great grandchildren: Faith and Matthew Hammons, Parker Gilly, Bryce Tucker, Nathan and Dominick Meunier. Loved by his family and friends, he will be profoundly missed by all of them.
During his lifetime, Norbert distinguished himself in many ways. As a Marine during WWII, he proudly served his country with courage and valor in the Pacific theatre and was the recipient of both a purple heart and a bronze star. After graduating from Springhill College, he was employed by the United States Postal Service, retiring in 1981 after 34 years of dedicated service. He shared a passion for fishing with his sons and sons-in-law and was an avid Saints fan for many years. Throughout his lifetime, he will be especially remembered for his devotion to his beloved family, his wry sense of humor, for his humility, kindness and compassion.
The family would like to express its sincerest appreciation to the staff of the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Home in Reserve, LA for their conscientiousness and compassion in caring for our father during the last fourteen months and to Clarity Hospice for their compassionate support in the last weeks of his life.
Family and friends are invited to attend the funeral services celebrating Norbert’s long and distinguished life. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 17, 2018 at Garden of Memories Funeral Home, 4900 Airline Drive in Metairie, LA followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. Interment will take place with his beloved wife in Garden of Memories Cemetery.
