Maurice Jack Seghers, Sr., 86, of Metairie passed away on Friday, November 2, 2018 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was the son of Lucian Maurice Seghers and Florabelle Derbes Seghers.
Mr. Seghers was born and raised in New Orleans. He graduated from St. Aloysius and joined the Air Force serving in the Korean War. Jack was married to Geraldine Marie Camet for 52 years. He retired from Whitney National Bank and filled his retirement years doing what he loved best, playing his trumpet. He founded his own band, Jack’s Jazz. He was a member and previous president of The New Orleans Ragtime and Dixieland Jazz Band. He was inducted into the Jazz Hall of Fame for Louisiana and the Musician’s Hall of Fame in Mississippi. He loved playing at the retirement home weekly and at many other events around the city.
He is survived by his three children: Maurice “Jay” Seghers, Jr. (Karen), Judy Seghers Cortese (Chris), Pamela Seghers (Tammy); eight grandchildren: David (Tisha), Brian (Katherine), Vicky Seghers; Christopher (Jennifer), Philip (Emily), Wesley, Nicholas (Allie) Cortese; seven great-grandchildren: Trey Seghers Nickens, Nicole, Kyle, Rowan, Reed Seghers, Olivia, Mikey Cortese; and Marilyn Wright, his longtime friend and companion.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, November 6, 2018 at St. Christopher the Martyr Catholic Church, 309 Manson Ave in Metairie, LA. The Rev. Frank Candalisa will officiate. Visitation for family and friends at 12:00 pm with a Mass of Christian Burial beginning at 1:00 pm followed by procession and interment at Lake Lawn Park Mausoleum, 5454 Ponchartrain Blvd. in New Orleans. His grandchildren and great grandchildren will be pallbearers and serve during mass. He will be dearly missed by all who loved him.
