Margaret Jean Mary Orr Munro, known as Mary Munro, passed away on Friday, October 26, 2018 at the age of 87.
She was born in Karachi, India and resided in England at the age of four. At the age of six, she attended Elmhurst Ballet School at Camberley in Surrey which is where her passion for ballet began. At age 15 she was accepted into the Ballet Rambert, a professional troupe in London. At 23, the chance of a lifetime came around, one that every ballet dancer dreamed of, and Mary Munro seized it at the Royal Festival Hall where she danced the part of “Giselle” and became an overnight sensation.
Mary Munro spent many years traveling with the ballet company and then settled down with a family and shortly after became a ballet teacher. She moved to America in order to pursue a teaching career and ended up in New Orleans, Louisiana. She taught for many years at New Orleans Dance Academy and retired at the age of 82.
Mary will forever be remembered by all of her grandchildren: Victoria Williams, Celia Hughes, Richard Norman, Stephen Norman, Chelsea Uddo, Harry Hudson-Taylor, Alfie Hudson-Taylor, Holly Hudson-Taylor, Wylf Taylor, and Sid Taylor. Mary also be lovingly remembered by her three children: Melanie Taylor, Stephen Taylor, and Celia Taylor. Mary will also be fondly remembered by her numerous ballet pupils, colleagues, and friends that she has made through her many years of teaching ballet.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Mary Munro will be held on Friday, November 2, 2018 at the Garden of Memories Funeral Home, 4900 Airline Drive, Metairie, LA 70001. Visitation will begin at 12:00 noon with a service starting at 2:00 pm.
