Buddy was a graduate of Jesuit High School, class of 1938. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Loyola University of New Orleans in 1942, and his Master’s degree in Organic Chemistry from the University of Detroit in 1944. Upon completion of his Master’s degree, he began working at the Southern Regional Research Laboratory, a division of the United States Department of Agriculture. In 1945, he was drafted into the Navy and served his country while stationed in San Diego, California. Upon returning to New Orleans from the Navy, he resumed his work at the Southern Regional Research Laboratory. During his tenure there, he initiated and conducted research on the chemical finishing of cotton, which included flame resistance, heat and rot resistance, wash-wear and durable press. This research led to the creation of what is known today as permanent press.
He and Gloria raised their family in the Carrollton neighborhood. He was a devoted member and supporter of Mater Dolorosa Church and School. He was a member of the Parish Council, the Holy Name Society, the choir, and a lector at Mass. Buddy was active in the Scouting Program and taught leadership courses for Cub Scouting and Webelos.
In 1973, he and his family moved to Metairie where he became a parishioner of St. Angela Merici Parish. He was a member of SAMA, the Young at Heart Senior Citizens group, the choir, and the Pastoral Council. He enjoyed attending the 4:00 vigil Mass at St. Angela followed by Saturday suppers with friends.
Buddy was an avid gardener and was a member and president of the Men’s Amaryllis Club. Anything he planted would grow!
The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to the staff of the Our Lady Wisdom Health Care. A special thanks to Rhonda Fernandes, Christina Lanier, Opal Cooper, Father Alan Roy, Deacon Tommy Lotz, and Sister Catherine Riggs, O. Carm. for their compassion and care during his final days.
