Tribute

Katie Boone Brandt passed away on Thursday, December 30, 2021. She was born on March 5, 1928 to the late Walter Roby and Marie Corbitt Boone. She was the beloved wife of Ronald Sigmund Brandt for 53 years. Katie is survived by her daughters Karen Brandt Horsley and Kim Brandt Oswald and four grandchildren: Katie Brandt Oswald, Margaret Oswald Thompson (David), Robert Emmett Oswald III and David Brandt Horsley. She is mother in-law of D. Brian Horsley and Robert E Oswald Jr.
Katie spent her young years in the small town of Willacoochee, Georgia. She attended Glynn Academy in Brunswick, GA and graduated with honors in 1945. She attended Auburn University and then decided to move to New Orleans to pursue a career in nursing. In 1950, she graduated from Charity School of Nursing with honors and merited special recognition for exceptional kindness to her patients. She went back to Auburn to complete her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing Science a year later. Katie returned to New Orleans where she worked at the Veterans Administration (VA) Hospital and met her late husband Ronald Brandt. They married in 1954 and moved to New York where Katie worked as a nurse at the VA hospital while Ronnie attended dental school. They settled in River Ridge, Louisiana where Ronnie practiced dentistry for 33 years. During that time, Katie was a wonderful home maker and loving mother. She enjoyed playing tennis and being a member of the New Orleans Dental Auxiliary where she served one term as President. She later worked at the Jefferson Parish Health Unit for 10 years where she became the head nurse.
Katie and Ronnie traveled internationally and visited over 100 countries around the world. Together they also enjoyed bowling and square dancing with Bar None and the Swinging Saints. As a widow, Katie was always on the go - still traveling, line dancing, playing lots of bridge and getting together for coffee with friends at PJs. She loved to garden and took immaculate care of her yard. Katie also enjoyed participating in fun activities with the Red Hats and the Senior Center and served as secretary for her Investment Club.
Kindhearted and quick witted, Katie was an inspiration and role model to all who knew her. She was an active member of St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church for 60 years. She served on the wonderful Care Team and was honored to receive the United Methodist Women (UMW) Mission award pin for the longest service in the UMW at St. Matthew’s.
