Joseph James Matherne Jr.

October 3, 1943 ~ February 9, 2021 (age 77)

Joseph James Matherne Jr., age 77, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 9, 2021. Joe, Jimmy, Daddy, and Pops are just some of the names he was called by the ones who loved him most. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Jo Ann Carboni Matherne, and their three children: Michele Matherne Huhner (John), Merrick Matherne (Kelly), and Kristen Matherne Ellis (Kip). He was the proud Pops/grandfather of Zachary Huhner, Madeline Matherne, Emily Huhner, Jackson Ellis, Mia Matherne, and Jacob Ellis.
Joseph was the son of the late Joseph Sr. and Essie Matherne, and is survived by his siblings: Arthemise Pellingon, Hulon Matherne (Dee), and Charles Claude Matherne (Claire). He is preceded in death by his siblings: Joseph Charles Matherne, Virgil Matherne, Lawrence Matherne, Gerald Matherne, and Lucille Delaney. He was the brother-in-law to Michael Carboni (Tamra), Jolie Songy (Daniel) and the late Mary Guzzardi (John). Joseph is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, loved ones, and friends.
Joseph was a parishioner of St. Christopher the Martyr Parish where he was an active member of the Knights of Columbus Council 4508 serving as the Grand Knight, the Holy Name Society, and Men’s Club. He was also a Eucharistic Minister. He was a member of the American Legion Post 0175. He was an auto parts salesman and manager with AutoZone for over 25 years.
He loved watching LSU sports, the Saints, and Fox News. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, loved a good crawfish boil, and aggravating his children. Never meeting a stranger, Joseph made friends wherever he went. His quick trips to Rouses were usually spent talking to friends more than grocery shopping. He will be greatly missed by all who loved him.
A private burial with his immediate family will be held in March and a Memorial Mass celebrating his life will take place at a later date.
