John Albert Hasselvander passed away on Saturday, December 29, 2018 at the age of 65.
He was born in New Orleans as the only child of the late Elizabeth “Betty” Marie Schindler Hasselvander and Milton Ernest Hasselvander. John is survived by his wife and best friend of 37 years, Margaret “Peggy” Block Hasselvander.
A devout Catholic, John belonged to different parishes in the area. He was a member of the St. Dominic Council of the Knights of Columbus, as well as a member of the Bienville Assembly Fourth Degree. He attended St. Anthony of Padua Elementary School and graduated in 1972 from Brother Martin High School. John went on to study communications at Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama and obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Broadcast Communications in 1976. He furthered his studies at Delgado obtaining an Associate Degree in Electronic Service Technology in 1978. While working as an intern at WLAE-TV in New Orleans, John continued to update his E.S.T. skills by attending night school. He worked at WLAE-TV for 23 years before having to retire due to illness. John was a train enthusiast, and loved everything to do with trains. In his spare time, he could be caught reading about trains, or searching for models for his impressive collection.
In lieu of flowers, masses are preferred or donations may be made to Louisiana Right to Life, 200 Robert E. Lee Blvd, New Orleans, LA 70124.
Private services were held for the family.
