Joanne Christine Wayland Amort - also known to many as "Our Dear Goosie" - loving wife of the late Norman Sinclair Amort Sr. was given to this world on November 8, 1927, and returned peacefully to our Lord and to the love of her life, Saturday, September 16, 2017, surrounded by family and friends.
Her parents were the late Charles Rucker Wayland of California and the late Ann Gardner of Illinois. She is survived by her loving children: Janine, Robert C. (Melanie), Norman S. (Kathleen), and Steven R. Amort, Dianne A. Delgado (Eddie René), and Sandra A. Maynard (Michael). Loving grandmother of Ryan C. (Ariana), Nicholas S. (Marie), Andrew C., David J., Elizabeth D., Steven S., and Alexander M. Amort, Kelley A. Derner (Jeff), Jessica A. Maynard, Karolyn R. Hagan (John) and of both the late Maria E. Amort and Kimberly G. Delgado.  Great Grandmother of Vance and Amy Amort, Sloane Derner, and Jack, Isabel, and Henry Hagan. A special recognition of love and gratitude is owed to Laura Patterson for her friendship, loving and devoted care to her during her final years.
Born in Palo Alto, California, she attended Dominican College where she met her future husband.  Married in 1947 in Managua, Nicaragua and resided in Matagalpa, Nicaragua for the next 24 years. Her favorite place there was their Coffee Plantation "El Tepeyac" which she always referred to as "The Nest".
Returning to the United States in 1971 she settled in New Orleans following the appointment of her husband to the post of Consul General of Nicaragua, based in New Orleans, where she was heavily involved with the Consul General Ladies Auxiliary Organization. In the early 80's, they moved to Oak Alley Plantation, Vacherie, LA where she held the positions of Historian and executive secretary to the Oak Alley Foundation.  During her tenure there, she published multiple books, articles, and newsletters and remained at this position until her retirement in 2003. She lived her remaining years with her loving daughter, Janine, and caring son, Steven and their many furry friends. They ultimately resided in Tickfaw, Louisiana until her death.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Service at Garden of Memories Funeral Home, 4900 Airline Drive, Metairie LA on Saturday, September 30, 2017, at 1:00 PM. Visitation will be held from 11:00 AM until service time. Interment will be in Garden of Memories Cemetery. A small gathering of family and friends will follow at the Garden of Memories facility to celebrate her life and for what we believe was "A Job Well Done" here on earth. In lieu of Flowers, the family has requested tax-deductible donations be made in her name to Tulane Cancer Center, Attention Cancer Center, 1511 Dufossat St., New Orleans, LA  70115.
