God welcomed home Helen Barbara Thorne, age 90, on July 14th, 2022. Helen was born in Lockport, Louisiana, to Charles and Lucia (Plaisance) Hicks. At the age of 10 her family relocated to Jefferson, Louisiana, where she attended Jefferson Middle School and High School.
As WWII came to an end, Helen was working at the Jeff Theatre taking tickets and selling popcorn. It was there that she met her future husband Paul “Sugie” Thorne Sr. through the GI Bill they were able to fulfill their dream of building a home and starting a family. They chose the small town of Harahan and lived on Roseland Parkway their entire marriage where neighbors became an extension of the family. Helen and Sugie were parishioners of St. Rita of Cascia Parish, where they attended mass and sent their three children to school. Helen enjoyed volunteering at the school cafeteria and was a substitute teacher for many years. She later worked for two lovely dentists for 22 years and made lifelong friendships during that time. Her hobbies were sewing and cooking, and there was always a place at her table to share a meal and enjoy the company of friends and family. She loved having a house filled with laughter and fun. She and Sugie hosted many crawfish boils and holiday parties. They had been married 57 years at the time of his death.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband and her son Paul “Skeeter” Thorne Jr.
She is survived by her daughters, Kevin Welty (Clay) and Melanie Purifoy (Rick), daughter-in-law Marie Thorne, grandchildren Rocky (Heather); Timothy; Dustin (Tiffany); Brooke (Michelle).
Through the years our blended family grew with Clay and Rick’s children and Helen became Mawmaw to four more grandchildren: Alicia (Matt); Stacey (Jacob); Trevor (Kimberly); and Katherine (Bryan).
Mawmaw loved the babies and was blessed with ten great grandchildren.
Helen’s companion for the past 16 years has been her rescued Papillon, Alli, whom she loved and cared for deeply.
We will keep her memory alive with the stories, recipes, and traditions that she so graciously shared with those she loved.
A mass and burial will be held at Garden of Memories Funeral Home and Cemetery, 4900 Airline Drive Metairie, LA. 70001 on Thursday, July 21, 2022 to honor and celebrate Helen’s life.
