Elsie Walker

Elsie “Bunny” Walker departed this earth on September 11, 2018. A 30-year resident of Broadmoor and devoted member of the New Orleans Bahá’í Community, she was a true New Orleanian at heart. Bunny loved the culture of music, art, dance, masquerade and festivals that the city is known for. She first fell in love with the city in 1979 when visiting for Mardi Gras and was determined from then on to make it her home.
Let us continually pray as Bunny journeys on to the Heavenly Kingdom where she joins her parents, Robert Wendell Walker, Sr., and Elsie Cuff Walker and her brother, R. Wendell Walker, Jr. as well as all the many family and friends that preceded her.
Those whom she left behind to join her at a later time are her two daughters, Lenette Cunningham (John), and Tahirih Guillory; two grandsons, Brandon and Kordell Cunningham; Sister-in-Law, Frieda Walker, nieces, Angela Kim Soyemi and Taraseih Oliver (Lew); great-nephews, Noah and Joshua Soyemi; a host of dearly loved cousins too numerous to list by name, and a host of friends that are as dear to her as family and loved just as much.
Bunny was born in Hampton, VA and was raised in Newport News, VA. Following in her parents accomplished footsteps, Bunny graduated from Huntington High School, Class of ’61 in Newport News, VA where she was a cheerleader, a member of the band, choir, and student council. An active social member in the community, Bunny was a Newport News, VA LINKS Chapter member, and a member of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. Bunny married Lilbert Thomas Greene, III (deceased) and of that union having her only two daughters.  She later
divorced and married for a second time, Arthur Larry Price (deceased), with whom, she moved to Biloxi, MS and visited New Orleans for the first time.
 She went on to receive her bachelor’s degree from Hampton University. She was then hired by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) as an Auditor with the Inspector General and Housing Management Specialists in New Orleans.  To further her career with HUD, she obtained her master’s degree from American University in Washington D.C. Then she accepted the promotion as Chief Property Officer in Philadelphia, where she retired from HUD. After which she worked from the State of Maryland as Director of Home Energy Programs. Later retiring for the State of Maryland and moved back to New Orleans.
She made New Orleans her home where she left an indelible mark on both the city’s civic and social fabric. As an elected Broadmoor Commissioner, she was significantly involved in rebuilding her beloved Broadmoor neighborhood after Hurricane Katrina.
Bunny was loved by many for her infectious laugh, community volunteerism and philanthropic spirit. She was known to often open her heart and her home to those in need of comfort and shelter no matter their station in life.  Grounded in the Bahá’í teachings, Bunny made all people welcomed. She truly embraced the quote by Bahá’u’lláh “Do not be content with showing friendship in words alone, let your heart burn with loving kindness for all   who crossed her path.”.
She was very proud of her Native American heritage as a member of the Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape Nation. With her Industrious and entrepreneurial nature, on any day you might find her handmade jewelry known as Bunny’s Beads, on display at various festivals and art markets.
Bunny will be greatly missed.
