Elizabeth Mendel Fontaine (82) passed away peacefully and was reunited with the lord on Sept 6,2021
A life well lived.
She was a native of New Orleans & resident of Kenner, La for the past 47 years.
Daughter of the late Earl J Mendel & late Evelyn C Mendel
Survived by her brother Earl J Mendel Jr (Carol) & Sister Jeanette M Gusler (Late Ellis)
Beloved mother to six children; Stacey F Douzart (Keith), Susan F Whittington (Vincent), Stanley J Fontaine Jr., Elizabeth F Delpidio (Robert), Christopher V Fontaine, George R Fontaine (Sabrina). MawMaw to 19 Grandchildren, 12 Great grandchildren and 1 great, great-grandchild.
She was well loved by all. The number of people she touched was infinite. Many sought refuge with my mom. Often joking, that there was a vacancy sign posted somewhere she was unable to turn off.
Betty, as she was affectionately known to her family and friends, was a first-class seamstress, cook & gardener.
Born with a servant’s heart. First to her god, family, friends, and her community.
Shy by nature, but never met a stranger. Always taking the opportunity to make a stranger feel comfortable in her presence.
What she loved most was spending time with her family. Whether it be passing down wisdom through her recipes from the past, bible verses from her church, or simply knowledge of garden flowers and their properties. She was always teaching about her history. She was the matriarch of the family.
She was never in a position of wealth, but that did not stop her from sharing what she had with anyone in need.
I came across a poem by John Wesley and thought it captured my mom appropriately, it goes:
Do all the Good you can
By all the Means you can
In all the Ways you can
In all the Places you can
At all the Times you can
To all the People you can
As long as Ever you can
Till the end she was ever the helpful servant.
God Bless her
Fly High Angel, you deserve those wings!
