Eleanor Genevieve Smith, known to family and friends as Dimpsy, and to her nieces and nephews as Bopper or Bop, lived a long and full life in New Orleans.
Dimpsy attended Ursuline Academy and graduated from Newcomb College where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta. She received her Master’s Degree at Peabody College. As a devoted educator, Dimpsy was an elementary teacher in New Orleans and later a school counselor at Edna Karr High School. She loved teaching. Years after her retirement, her students fondly remembered her. Dimpsy loved to travel and spent many summers exploring the US often with her nieces and nephews along for the memorable adventures. Her travels included destinations in Europe, Mexico, Guatemala, Norway, Denmark, Scotland and England. She loved sewing and spent many late nights creating outfits for her nieces when they were young. For years, she enjoyed taking films and photos of her travels and of the extended family, and sharing that history during family reunions. Dimpsy enjoyed museums and in later years attended many historical society lectures, and often visited Louisiana Plantations, especially Destrehan Plantation. She also enjoyed attending Catholic retreats. She enjoyed volunteering throughout the community. Born on St. Patrick’s Day, Dimpsy loved shamrocks, St. Patrick’s Day festivities and all things green.
Dimpsy was the daughter of the late Dr. George L. Smith and Adele Cornay Smith, sister to the late Peter Cornay Smith and the late Martha “Carol” Smith Schiaffino. Dimpsy is survived by her nieces Donna Gilbert, Eleanor Smith, Claire Moughon, Julie Taetz, Carol Cassisa, Ellen Church, nephews Stephen Smith and George Schiaffino, 15 great nieces and nephews, and 11 great, great nieces and nephews.
