DON FRANCIS CARMOUCHE, 84, passed away on September 6, 2021, in Louisiana with his daughter and friends by his side. Don was born May 9, 1937 in St. Rose, Louisiana to Anna Marie Simon Carmouche and Fulgence Bernard Carmouche. Both of his parents passed away when he was very young. He and his eleven siblings and their families were extremely close and remained loyal and devoted family members. Don was preceded in death by his siblings, Annette Carmouche, Rene Carmouche, Earl Carmouche, Irvin Carmouche, Herbert Carmouche, Emmette Carmouche, Allen Carmouche, and Ethel Carmouche Mancuso. He is survived by his siblings, Beulah Carmouche, James Carmouche, and Harry Carmouche. Don graduated from Destrehan High School in 1954. After marrying Shirley Durr Carmouche in 1955, they moved to their lifelong home in Destrehan, where they raised their daughter, Donielle. They provided a warm, loving, and welcoming home. Several of Donielle’s childhood friends recently expressed gratitude for the wonderful memories at the house and camp and on annual summer vacations. Donielle and her husband, Steve Allen, blessed Don and Shirley with three grandchildren, Brittany, Brennan, and Brett. After Donielle & family moved to Virginia, Don and Shirley travelled several times per year to Virginia to visit and enjoyed precious time with them on their frequent visits to Louisiana. “Papa” was truly the most perfect and loving father and grandfather. Don thoroughly enjoyed hunting and fishing with his family and friends at his camps in St. Rose and Cocodrie. He worked for Boh Brothers Construction Company, where he was a valued employee and friend to many coworkers. When he retired at 62 years of age, he sacrificed his dreams of having more time for hunting and fishing, to care for his mother-in-law, father-in-law, and ailing wife, earning the nickname, “St. Don.” After 59 years of marriage, he lost his beloved wife Shirley. After declining health, Don was later blessed with cherished caregiver, “Ms. Linda.” Linda Nelson, her husband Ricky, her daughter, granddaughter, and other workers cared for Don for several years so that he could remain as long as possible in his home in Destrehan. The years of care, service, and love provided by Ms. Linda and her crew of caregivers is greatly appreciated. Special thanks is also extended to his wonderful caregivers at Peristyle Residence in Metairie, as well as those from St. Joseph’s hospice, and to his neighbors the Torres’ and those family members, especially Jeannie and Cherie Aucoin, who unfailingly extended much needed assistance over the years. Don’s life will be celebrated with a service at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, September 15 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, Destrehan, Louisiana. Don will be greatly missed and always remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, friend, and coworker. In lieu of customary remembrances, please direct any memorial contributions to St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church or St. Joseph’s Hospice.
