Betty Thompson

Betty Thompson came into this world on January 12, 1931 and left this world to be with her heavenly father on March 27, 2021.  Betty was married to the love of her life Thomas (Tommy) Thompson on September 7, 1947 for 50 years.   She was the daughter of Ouida Pitre Trahan and Rufus Paul Trahan.  Her brother, Reno Trahan, predeceased her.  She is survived by her son Thomas J. (T. J.) Thompson (Roberta) and Gail Thompson Artigue (Richard).  Betty had nine grandchildren:  Thomas Ronald Thompson (Annie Laurie), Scott Allen Thompson, Christine Lynn Bromley, Marshall L. Perez, Jr (Laura), Gregory Allen Russo, Anthony Joseph Russo (Sharon), Charles P. Artigue (Beth), Carri Artigue, and Ryan Michael Artigue, 15 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren.
Betty grew up in the tiny southern town of Houma, La. on the property of Southdown Sugar Cane Plantation.  The family then moved to the Mid-City area, eventually relocating to the Metairie area.  She and Tommy enjoyed dancing, camping in their motor home, boating, and spending time at their camp on Four Bayou Pass on the Gulf of Mexico.  She was an active dancer at Critic’s Choice, Mo’s Chalet, The Max, and Jefferson Orleans - all In Metairie, La.  Betty loved life to the fullest and was the life of the party.  She enjoyed doing charitable work and was an active member of B.P.O. Elks Ladies Auxiliary #30, and was inducted as the first female member of B.P.O. Elks Lodge #30.   She drove trucks with her husband, worked as a dental assistant, and an office manager of Sintes Boat Works at the lakefront.  Betty never took NO as an answer, and as a result of her quick responses and determination, she was given the name of “Maw Maw Battle Ax” from her grandchildren because her mouth went as fast as a machine gun. She loved the name; it would always bring a big smile to her face. She was so proud of her family.
For the remaining 20 plus years of her life, Betty didn’t slow down. She spent time with family and friends doing what New Orleanians do - crawfish boils, festivals, barbecues, Mardi Gras, St. Patrick’s parade, Saints games, working on projects around the Lodge and of course….. DANCING!
She will be missed by all who knew her.  She enjoyed having happy people around her and making people happy!
Unfortunately, the MUSIC STOPPED on Saturday, March 27, 2021. She passed peacefully at home and is resting.  Wanna bet?  Bet ya she and “My Tommy” are having drinks and dancing to “In The Mood”.  Hope heaven has dance halls!
The interment will be on Wednesday, April 7, 2021 at 2:00 pm at the B.P.O. Elks Tomb, located in Greenwood Cemetery, New Orleans, La. on City Park Ave. and Canal Street (front gate will be open for easy access). Afterwards, relatives and friends are invited to share in a Celebration of Life to be held at the B.P.O. Elks Lodge #30, 2215 Cleary Ave., Metairie, La. from 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm.  Graveside prayers will be said by Fr. Chris DeLerno of St. Mary Magdalen and the B.P.O. Elks Lodge #30 ritual committee will have a memorial toast to Betty as a fallen member. 
Donations to B.P.O. Elks Lodge #30, Veterans Fund, 2215 Cleary Ave, Metairie, La.  70001 are preferred.
