Elvin Gerald Dwyer

August 3, 1927 ~ September 30, 2017 (age 90) 90 Years Old
Elvin Gerald Dwyer, while surrounded by his family, passed peacefully on Saturday,
September 30, 2017 into the loving arms of the Almighty God at the age of 90. He was born on Wednesday, August 3, 1927 in the family home on Cypress Street, Metairie, LA to Viola Shamp Dwyer and William J. Dwyer, Jr.  His family was one of Metairie’s first pioneer families. At the age of eighteen, he enlisted in the US Army in November 1945 and was stationed in Weiden, Germany in the Occupational Forces post World War II. He returned home in 1947 and began a business refinishing wood floors. In the early 1950’s, he became a popular, well liked bartender at Gennaro’s Bar and Restaurant on Metairie Road. In 1960, he became a Jefferson Parish School Bus Driver carrying “the most precious cargo in the world” as he would often say. He drove the school bus for 30 years. Simultaneously, he worked at TACA Airlines as Cargo Load Manager.
Fishing was a favorite pastime of his, he enjoyed boiling seafood and shucking oysters on the patio, he took pride in his garden and was excellent at growing vegetables, he loved to sing, especially “Danny Boy” and other Irish songs, cooking and good food was always enjoyable for him, as was an ice cold beer, and he was always good for telling a joke or making a funny comment to get a laugh out of people, but spending time with his family was surely his greatest pleasure. In 2005, he moved to Mandeville, LA to be near his family and established himself in organizations such as The Mandeville Senior Citizens Club, AARP, and COAST which meets at the Paul Spitzfaden Community Center. This twice weekly outing to meet with his friends was the highlight of each week for him. He was a caring and devoted husband and father and an honest and hardworking man with many friends. He will be greatly missed by all who loved and knew him.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 50 years, Shirley DePoorter Dwyer. He was the loving father of Paul Dwyer (Michael Laitta) and Rhonda Dwyer Alleman (Dwight) and adoring grandfather of Mandy Dwyer Coleman (David), the late Chad Dwyer, Rachel Alleman Gerhardt (David), Jordan Alleman (Kylen); great grandfather of Ava Elizabeth Coleman, Anna Brynne Coleman, Kingsley Dove Alleman, Greta Mae Gerhardt and Liza Louise Gerhardt due to be born in January.  Brother of Larry Dwyer, Mary Gressett and the late Harold “Buck” Dwyer, Vera Pope, Irwin Dwyer, William “Bill” Dwyer, Edward “Eddie” Dwyer and Audrey Dwyer.  Also survived by many nieces and nephews that he cared for very much. Lifelong friends with Laurence Ernst and the Ernst family and special friend of Janet Jacobsen and Mary Lou Lacoste with acknowledgement of all his friends at the Sptizfaden Mandeville Community Center.  The family would like to give special thanks to the St Tammany Parish Hospital ICU team- doctors, nurses and support staff- for their sincere concern and the excellent care given to him during his last days.
