Burgess B. Nixon 91, of Metairie, LA, passed away Sunday August 20 at his home. Burgess was a World War II veteran having served in the U.S. Army Air Corp. After his plane was shot down behind enemy lines on the occupied Island of Manilla, he worked with the local resistance to help the U.S. Liberate the Island. After the war he earned his Master’s degree in Mathematics and spent many years teaching math on both the high school and college level. He owned and operated Burgess Nixon Real Estate, Inc., worked as a V.A. Appraiser, and served on the Louisiana Real Estate Commission in many capacities including chairman. He was active in his church, politics, and was always there for his family. Husband, father, teacher, and business man, a very busy man with deep rooted values. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Burgess is survived by his wife of 66 years, Carolyn Cox Nixon, his sons Burgess B. Nixon Jr., and John Thomas Nixon, daughter Sheila Nixon Herrmann, son in law Walter Theodore Herrmann III, daughter in law Donna Nixon, his grandchildren Karen Herrmann Wilder, Christopher Bryan Wilder, Janel Nicole Nixon, Jacqueline Aileen Herrmann, Krystal Nixon, Sara Nixon, and great grandson Cole Austin Wilder. He was preceded in death by his son Billy Clarence Nixon.
Visitation will be held 9:00 am to 11:00 am on Saturday, August 26, 2017 at Garden of Memories Funeral Home, 4900 Airline Drive, Metairie, LA 70001. A Funeral Service will follow at 11:00 am. Burgess will be laid to rest in the Garden of Memories Cemetery following the service.
